Dave Edwards and It’s Just my Take 1-5-23
There are 43 of them….an insane 43 bowl games in the college football postseason! To quote the great Vince Lombardi, “what the hell’s going on out here”?
From the Cricket Celebration Bowl to the Famous Toastery Bowl, we get 43 bowl games crammed down our Pop Tarts Bowl-filled mouths. With the exception of about 15 of them, the rest are a waste of time! I can’t believe the amount of 6-6 teams squaring off for Cheetos or Idaho Famous Potato or Duke’s Mayo bowl fame! To make things worse, the Big Ten’s own Minnesota, at a salty 5-7 this year, played in the Quick Lane bowl in Detroit. The Gophers went home with a ridiculous 5-8 record after succumbing to vaunted Bowling Green. Enough already!
The NCAA has to put its foot down and greatly reduce the amount of bowl games going forward. Once contracts expire and the new playoff format begins next year, let’s give worthy teams a chance to play in the 20 to 25 bowl games available, and boot the silly 6 win requirement that gets incredibly mediocre teams into bowls. And, with the transfer portal and players opting out with aspirations of going pro, the games are often downright awful. Oh, and have you seen some of the “crowds” at these games? I’ve seen more people at a brat fry!
I will say the Pop Tarts Bowl, when Kansas State devoured a huge Pop Tart after the win, was a highlight that reminded me of my childhood. Especially when they came out with the chocolate ones.
