A state lawmaker is encouraged by Governor Evers’ interest in relocating the Green Bay state prison in Allouez.
Republican Representative David Steffen of Howard says it gives Republicans and Democrats something they can agree on. He says it’s encouraging that the governor is willing to work on this right away. He says it’s a great start to the new session.
Steffen wants to close the prison, build a new one, and redevelop the current site. He says it’s had the highest number of inmate-on-staff assaults of the state’s 36 facilities. He says it’s also the most expensive for repairs.
Steffen hopes Evers will put the prison project in the next state budget.
