Brewers salvage final game in Pirates series

Milwaukee starter Mike Fiers continued his dominance on the mound as the Brewers beat the Pirates 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.  Fiers (W, 4-1) went seven strong innings giving up two runs on two hits while striking out seven and walking just one.  It was his fourth straight win since being recalled by the Brewers (72-58) on August 9th, after fellow hurler Matt Garza was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The Crew pushed across two runs in each of the first two innings with two-out RBI singles by Scooter Gennett and Mark Reynolds in the first and Jonathan Lucroy and Aramis Ramirez in the second as Milwaukee held a 4-2 over Pittsburgh (67-63) lead after two innings.

Pittsburgh made it interesting in the ninth inning as Andrew McCutchen homered to left off closer Francisco Rodriguez to cut the Brewers lead to 4-3, but K-Rod struck out Pedro Alvarez with a runner on first  to notch his National League leading 39th save of the year.  With the Brewers win and  a St. Louis loss at Philadelphia earlier Sunday, Milwaukee was able to push their lead in the NL Central up to a game and a half over the Cardinals.

Milwaukee heads out west for a three-game series against the San Diego Padres beginning Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 9:10 p.m. and the pre-game show beginning at 8:35 p.m. on 1150-WHBY.
