Ellis has concerns about school bill

The latest proposal to change accountability standards for public schools, and certain private schools, is raising a red flag.

Sen. Mike Ellis says he's concerned about a provision that would force failing schools to close, or reopen as charter schools. A private, statewide organization would oversee the charter schools. The Neenah Republican says he doesn't want to see school decisions taken away from the community.

The proposal would also assign letter grades to public schools, in place of the existing grading system. Right now, schools are judged on whether they're meeting expectations.

A Senate committee could vote on the bill, this week.
