January ranks high for below-zero days

The temperature was below zero on well over half of the days in January, in Appleton and Green Bay.

Meteorologist Scott Berschbeck is with the National Weather Service office in Green Bay. He says Green Bay had 21 days of below-zero temperatures, and that's the fourth most, on record, in the city. The average temperature of 8.7 degrees was the 17th coldest.

In Appleton, the city's 18 below-zero days ranks sixth, while the average temperature of nine degrees is the 10th coldest.

Berschbeck says snow totals were above normal for the month, but they weren't too high on the lists for either city.

This week's forecast shows that below-zero temperatures could return on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
