Sturgeon spearing season about to start

Thousands of people will head out to Lake Winnebago and the upriver lakes tomorrow morning for the opening of the sturgeon spearing season.

The season is scheduled to run 16 days, but DNR sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says they'll probably hit the harvest caps early. He says that's because the water is very clear.

Koenigs says most spearers won't come home with one of the prehistoric fish, but they'll likely come back with some stories. He says people can actually become emersed in the culture, without spearing anything.

Koenigs says the water is clear enough to see about 16 feet down. The last two years, the visibility was only around eight feet. Koenigs says that means they could see some very big fish.
