Appleton police officer honored by military

A lieutenant for the Appleton police department is being singled out for helping police officers work around their military duties.

The department of defense presented Lt. Dan Weiske with the Patriot Award, in a surprise ceremony yesterday afternoon.

Weiske handles the scheduling for patrol officers. That means he has to accommodate for officers in the reserves, when they're gone for training. He says everyone goes above and beyond to fill shifts, especially when officers are gone for two weeks in the summer.

Officer Tonia Elsrod nominated Weiske for the honor, and she was one of the first to learn that he was picked. She says it felt like winning the lottery, and the award wasn't even for her.

Weiske was in the Air Force, serving on active duty, for four years.
