Science, tech ed a focus of referendum

Voters in the Appleton school district will decide a referendum next Tuesday, and the proposed projects include upgrading science and tech education programs.

The first question asks for $25 million for maintenance and technology upgrades. The tech ed areas at West and East high schools would be remodeled.

West high school principal Greg Hartjes says much of their equipment dates back to the 60s and 70s, so they can't teach students the skills they need. He says they can only train kids for a job that is long gone.

He says if the referendum would fail, he thinks the school would have to drop courses in the skilled trades. He says it become irrelevant to offer those types of trades, if they don't meet the current industry standards. Hartjes says that would happen at a time when local businesses are looking for skilled employees.

The district is also asking for money to remodel the science areas at East high school, and three of the four middle schools -- Wilson, Madison, and Roosevelt. It's been at least 40 years since they were revamped.
