Locals join effort to end violence against women

Two local groups joined with others around the country, and the world today, to demand an end to violence against women.

One Billion Rising for Justice is a Valentine's Day campaign that started last year.

Beth Schnorr is the executive director of Harbor House, and she says the United Nations reports that around the world, one in three women will be victims of abuse, or sexual assault, sometime in their lives. She says that's about one billion women.

Activists gathered at City Center Plaza over the noon hour. Harbor House and the Sexual Assault Crisis Center organized the local event.

Schnorr says Valentine's Day can be a tough time for some victims of abuse. She says they hope to transform that, by celebrating how people care for each other.
