State prison population steady

Fewer inmates are getting out of prison on parole, but that doesn't appear to be having a major impact on the state's prison population.

A report over the weekend detailed a decline in the percentage of inmates who are released on parole over the last couple of years. Over the last year, the number of inmates in state prisons has remained steady.

Figures from the department of corrections show there were less than 22,000 at the end of last week. The total was up by about 30, from a year ago.

The state has about 2,800 prisoners under the old sentencing system that lets them apply for parole, and be released early. The parole commission granted six percent of requests last year, compared to 13 percent in 2010.

Since 2000, inmates have had to serve their entire sentence before they can be released on probation.

State corrections officials say many of the remaining inmates who are eligible for parole committed violent crimes.
