Hospitals, clinics concerned about infections

There's a push to reduce the number of infections that patients develop in hospitals.

Officials from more than 60 hospitals and surgical centers are at a summit on the issue today in Wausau.

Gwen Borlaug is with the state Division of Public Health. She says the CDC reports that Wisconsin has greatly reduced some types of infections. But she says there's a lot of work to do, when it comes to surgical-site infections.

Nationally, the CDC found that four percent of patients get a new infection while they're hospitalized, and 11 percent of them die because of it. That's more than 70,000 deaths a year in the U.S.
