Appleton officers cleared in shooting

The man who was shot by Appleton police was trying to commit suicide by cop.

That's what Green Bay police determined, from their investigation into last Thursday's incident, in the 1300 block of S. Monroe Street.

Capt. Todd Thomas says the 22-year-old man used a file to remove the orange tip from the air-soft gun that he pointed at two officers.

Outagamie County District Attorney Carrie Schneider says she's clearing the officers of any wrongdoing.

Investigators say the officers confronted the man, because he matched the description of a shoplifting suspect, at a nearby gas station. They say the man wanted to make sure the clerk saw him steal something, so police would be called.
