2 local counties issuing licenses to same-sex couples

Outagamie and Brown counties are now issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Outagamie County Clerk Lori O'Bright originally denied three couples earlier this morning, but she changed her decision after the county's attorney weighed in. The clerks in Winnebago and Calumet counties are holding off.

A spokeswoman for the state vital records office says they're looking for guidance from state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, on how to handle the situation. He asked a federal judge to put her ruling on hold, shortly after last Friday's ruling.

The judge threw out the state's constitutional amendment, banning gay marriage. The judge scheduled a hearing at 1 p.m. to hear Van Hollen's request. He also filed a formal appeal of the decision.

Clerks in Milwaukee, Dane, and Rock counties are also issuing licenses.
