Library starting early literacy program

There's a new early-learning initiative through the Appleton Public Library, to try to turn around a decline in third-grade reading scores.

Tanya Misselt of the children's department says librarians will leave the library to reach out to families. She says they're going to target low-income people, especially Hispanic and Hmong families.

Misselt says they want to work with parents, to help them learn how to raise readers. She says they'll also make sure people know about the other services that are available.

Those agencies include the Fox Cities Literacy Council, and the Outagamie County Birth-3 Early Intervention program.
