More companies offering same-sex benefits

More than three-quarters of the nation's companies offer benefits to same-sex couples.

That's the finding of a study by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. Research director Julie Stich says 82 percent provide the benefits, and that's 21 percent higher than last June.

That's when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has to recognize legally performed same-sex marriages. She says the reasons that private companies offer the benefits varies, from being more inclusive of different family types, to wanting to comply with federal laws.

Stich says 32 percent of companies in states like Wisconsin, that ban gay marriage, offer same-sex benefits. That's up from 9 percent last year.
