New heart screening required for newborns

Starting today, the state is requiring a new screening test for newborns.

Governor Walker signed a bill earlier this year, requiring hospitals to check for congenital heart defects. Nicole Hudzinski of the American Heart Association's Wisconsin chapter says the test doesn't bother the baby.

Theda Clark newborn care coordinator Kim Goodacre says the hospital has been screening newborns for the condition for about three years, and doctors can take action right away.

Goodacre says without the test, the heart defect can be easily overlooked, because many of the babies that have it, appear healthy.
