Appleton's police chief retiring

Appleton's police chief is retiring.

Pete Helein made the announcement this afternoon, saying his last day on the job will be September 5. He says a health condition prompted his decision.

Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna says Helein is a great employee for the city, who worked his way through the ranks of the police department to become chief.

The police and fire commission will meet to find an interim chief, while they search for a permanent replacement. Helein became Appleton's police chief in January of 2012.
