Hanna not taking stance on wheel tax

A proposal for a wheel tax is coming before the Appleton city council next week, and the idea came from the city's leader.

Mayor Tim Hanna says he thought about the possibility while cutting his lawn, and thinking of ways to ease the burden of special assessments on homeowners.

The $20 a year vehicle tax would more than make up for the money lost in the assessments for street reconstruction projects.

Hanna says he won't try to influence the city council on whether members should stick with an assessment policy, or move to the wheel tax. He says he can justify either one, and he's not a fan of one over the other. He says it's a decision for the council to make.

Hanna says plenty of people will be upset with the council, whichever way members vote.
