Wheel tax debate back at city council

The fate of a proposed wheel tax in Appleton could be decided tonight.

The city council is taking up the idea of charging $20 a year for each vehicle that weighs up to four tons.

Ald. Joe Martin introduced the proposal in July. He says it was debated thoroughly, and it should be voted on tonight.

The wheel tax would replace the city's special assessments to property owners for street reconstruction projects. Homeowners along John Street sparked the debate, earlier this year, by placing signs in their yards protesting the assessments.

Martin says the thousands of dollars in charges are "crippling" for the community.
