Food drive now part of Christmas Parade

There's a new addition to this year's Appleton Christmas Parade, and it could bring in a lot of food to a local pantry.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will collect canned goods this evening, between the Santa Scamper and the start of the parade.

Local chapter president Anthony Snyder helped organize Thrivent Cans Hunger, and he says with the weather, there could be 80,000 or 90,000 people there. He says if just 10 percent of them bring a canned good, they'd collect 8,000 to 9,000 items.

Snyder says they'll have a caravan of trucks, driving along College Avenue, and volunteers will collect the cans from people along the route. He says they're only taking canned goods, because paper, glass, or cardboard packages could be damaged.

Snyder says the food will go to the St. Joseph Food Program in Menasha.
