Deer harvest jumps 7.7 percent in 2012
Meat processors across the state are getting a lot of business this week, after hunters killed nearly 244,000 deer,
during the nine-day gun hunting season that ended on Sunday.
DNR big game ecologist Kevin Wallenfang says that's a 7.7 percent increase over last year. He says the northeast region had even better luck, with an 8.9 percent increase and more than 54,000 deer harvested.
Brown County hunters took 869 deer, which is a 50 percent increase. Calumet County's harvest total is up 17 percent, and in Outagamie County, hunters killed 14 percent more deer than last year.
In Winnebago County, the harvest total dropped 18 percent.
Wallenfang says the weather varied across the state during the hunt, with most of the state seeing warm weather, but 18 inches of snow fell in the snow belt. He says there was also widespread fog during the opening weekend.
