STD rates rising among young people
More young people need to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases.
That's one of the findings of a national study by the CDC. The report found that new cases of HIV are growing the fastest among 13- to 24-year-olds, and 22 percent of the sexually active people at that age, aren't getting tested.
Appleton public health officer Kurt Eggebrecht says HIV isn't a big problem right now in Appleton, only one new case was reported last year. But he says he's concerned about the increasing number of chlamydia and gonorrhea cases.
Eggebrecht says people don't necessarily need to get tested right away, but they should make it a part of their routine check-ups with their doctor.
