Walker pushing lawmakers on mine bill

Governor Walker says the Legislature needs to act quickly next year, if the state hopes to lure a mining company to Wisconsin.

The governor says he's confident Gogebic Taconite will renew its plans to open an iron ore mine in the northern part of the state, as long as lawmakers streamline the mine permitting process.

The company supported a proposal that the Senate narrowly voted down last session.

Walker says he hopes lawmakers can pass a similar bill early next spring. He says if it doesn't happen until later, it could push the project back at least a year.

Gogebic Taconite officials say the project in Iron and Ashland counties could create up to 700 mining jobs, and many more positions in the surrounding area.
