State, union dispute impact of King jobs

While the next state budget from Governor Walker would add more nurses at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, there are differing views on whether that will help with staffing levels.

Randy Nitschke of the department of veterans affairs says the governor is proposing 25 new full-time registered nursing positions, and nearly 58 certified nursing assistant jobs.

Troy Bauch of the state employees union says the state is having a tough time filling its existing vacancies, because their wages aren't competitive with the private sector. He says that's forcing workers into overtime shifts.

Nitschke disagrees. He says they are competitive, when benefits are factored in.

He says they have more than 500 caregiver positions, and right now, 15 FTE spots are open. Nitschke says they should be able to fill the new jobs relatively quickly.
