DNR highlights holiday waste
The DNR is trying to reduce waste during the holiday season.
Elisabeth Olson is a natural resources educator for the agency, and she says people generate 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. She says that adds up to about a million extra tons of garbage in landfills across the country.
Olson says it's easy to reuse items like gift boxes, bows, and wrapping paper. She says people should consider using newspapers, or other things, when they're wrapping presents.
Olsen says some people use paper plates, instead of regular dishes, and that adds to the problem.
