Appleton approves 4K funding
Appleton's four-year-old kindergarten program is officially a "go" for the next school year.
The school board agreed this afternoon to provide up to $2.3 million from the district's version of a "rainy day fund" to pay for the first year.
Assistant superintendent Judy Baseman says districts have to foot most of the bill, when they start a new program. She says under the formula, the state only provides funding for one-third of the students in the program, during the first year. She says that goes up to two-thirds in the second year, and 100 percent in the third.
There aren't many districts in the state that don't offer 4K yet, and Baseman says they've been planning their program for the last three or four years. She says they're going to partner with child care providers to host the program.
