NRA plan comes with big cost in Appleton

Appleton already has police officers at all of its high schools and middle schools, but the price tag would be high, if there was one at every school.

The National Rifle Association wants every school to have an armed guard, in the wake of this month's school shooting at a Connecticut high school.

Appleton school superintendent Lee Allinger says they also have a number of police-school liaison officers that each handle four or five elementary schools.

Allinger says the district puts $350,000 in its budget, for its share of the program, and the city's police department also pitches in. He says there are 28 school sites in the district, and it would probably cost four times as much to hire an officer for every one.

Allinger says he doesn't see their officers as "armed guards" because they do a lot of proactive work with students, staff, and parents.
