DNR analyzing first wolf hunt
Wisconsin's first wolf hunting season ended more than two months
earlier than expected, and the DNR is already preparing for next year.
The wolf hunt started on October 15, and hunters reached the harvest cap of 116, over the weekend. The season was scheduled to run through February.
DNR wolf expert Adrian Wydeven says he thought hunting wolves would be more of a challenge, but the hunters and trappers did their homework on how to scout and track the animals.
Wydeven says biologists are now analyzing tissue and teeth samples from the wolves, to learn more about Wisconsin's population. He says they're also asking hunters how they spent their time in the woods.
Wydeven says DNR officials are also working on regulations for using dogs while hunting wolves. A judge blocked the use of hunting dogs this year, because of a lack of rules.
