Mining debate a top state story in 2012
A proposal to streamline the state's permitting process for mining couldn't get through the state Senate this year, and a company that was pushing for an iron ore mine in northwest Wisconsin dropped its plans.
The debate over mining was one of the top stories in the state, in 2012.
Republican Senator Dale Schultz blocked the bill. He says he would like to open the door for all mining companies, but it has to be done in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way.
Majority Republicans in the Legislature plan to revive the mining debate next year.
