Russian adoption ban hits close to home
An Appleton adoption attorney is reacting, after families waiting to adopt a child from Russia were dealt a blow this week, when Russian president Vladimir Putin signed a bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children.
Adoption Attorney Richard Schoenbohm is a member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. He says many American families and Russian children have benefited from adoptions. He says the decision is surely heartbreaking for families that were already well through the process of adopting a Russian child.
Hundreds were adopted by families in northeast Wisconsin. Marcy Lee of Appleton and her husband adopted a baby girl from Russia 16 years ago, and she can't believe this is happening to prospective parents, and the children who need a home.
Schoenbohm says many of the children that would be adopted by Americans will likely spend the rest of their childhood in an orphanage.
