Farm Bill deal apparently in place

It looks like lawmakers will decide to extend the U.S. Farm Bill, and it would prevent a spike in milk prices.

The current bill is expiring at the start of the new year, and analysts warned that in about a month, shoppers would have had to pay twice as much for milk.

Phil Ullmer is the president of the Brown County Farm Bureau, and he says it shouldn't have come down to the wire.

The agreement between the House and Senate agriculture committees extends the 2008 farm bill for one year.

Kevin Jarek is the UW-Extension's ag agent in Outagamie County. He says a jump in prices for dairy products could have long-term effects. He says it could lead people to stop buying milk and other items, and permanently change their habits.

Jarek says because dairy farmers only receive a small percentage of the actual price of a gallon of milk, they wouldn't have benefited much from a spike.
