Proposal would toughen OWI laws
Drunk drivers would face steeper penalties, if two Republican lawmakers from southeast Wisconsin get their way.
Sen. Alberta Darling of River Hills and Rep. Jim Ott of Mequon are trying to criminalize the first offense, for people with a high blood-alcohol percentage. They also want to confiscate vehicles from people with at least three convictions, and create minimum sentences for drunk drivers who hurt or kill people.
They pushed for similar changes last session, but their efforts failed when fiscal estimates showed they would cost tens of millions of dollars.
