Eagles gather along Fox River in Kaukauna

Once an endangered species, the nation's symbol is on full display along the Fox River in Kaukauna.

1,000 Islands Environmental Center naturalist Debbie Nowak says there are more than 100 bald eagles hanging out along the river, hunting for fish. She says that's because the lakes and streams that they usually feed in, are frozen over.

Nowak says it's common to see about a dozen eagles at a time. She says the best time to see them is in the early morning hours, when they tend to be the most active.

She says while the environmental center is a good spot for eagle viewing, right now, most of them are across the river, by the Thilmany mill.
