Wis. gets mixed report card on tobacco
Wisconsin is either excelling or failing in different aspects of tobacco laws and prevention efforts.
A report card from the American Lung Association gives Wisconsin an "A" for smoke-free air laws, and a "B" for cigarette taxes. Spokeswoman Kim Lacina says the state got those high marks because of the workplace smoking ban, and the cigarette tax is among the 10 highest in the nation.
She says the state received failing grades for tobacco prevention and smoking cessation programs, because of low funding levels. Lacina says the state spends $5.3 million on those programs now, but spent $23 million in 2000.
Lacina says tobacco control programs took hits in the last state budget, as part of Governor Walker's plan to reign in spending.
