Ellis wants local control of school choice

Governor Walker says he's considering expanding the state's school choice program, but a Republican lawmaker from Neenah says it won't go anywhere, if people in the affected school districts don't get a say in the matter.

Senate President Mike Ellis says local school property taxes would go up, if the state takes money away from public schools.

Ellis says he'll introduce a bill that requires school choice supporters to circulate a petition. If they get enough signatures, it would trigger a referendum.

Ellis says he won't allow a vote on any expansion of the voucher program, without those protections.

The program is currently in place in Milwaukee and Racine.
