1157th returns home
Hundreds of people gathered at the EAA this afternoon to welcome home the Wisconsin National Guard's 1157th Transportation Company.
About 130 soldiers from that Oshkosh-based unit spend 10 months in Afghanistan running convoy missions.
One of them is Sergeant Luis Cortez Avilla of Oshkosh. While serving in Afghanistan, he became a U-S citizen. Cortez says his fellow soldiers helped him study for the exam.
Cortez Avilla says his parents moved to the U.S. from Mexico when they were 20, and he's the first in his family to become a U.S. citizen. He says doing it while he was serving overseas was special.
The soldiers actually returned to U.S. soil last week, but they were at Camp Shelby in Mississippi, going through the demobilization process.
