AAA hopes texting crash sends message
An accident in Kimberly that left one man dead didn't have to happen. That's the feeling of AAA Wisconsin spokeswoman Pam Moen.
Court records say 19-year-old Pa Tou Xiong of Little Chute was texting when she hit 46-year-old James Weiss of Kimberly. Weiss was riding his bike along Kimberly Avenue last July, and he died several days later.
Prosecutors are now charging Xiong with homicide by negligent driving, and she made her first court appearance yesterday.
Moen says it's extremely dangerous to text and drive, and that's why the auto group pushed state lawmakers to ban it. She says hopefully, the tragedy will serve as a wake-up call.
Moen says drivers shouldn't wait for police to step up their enforcement of the ban – they should take it upon themselves to be more responsible behind the wheel.
