Income tax cut wouldn't offset social security hike

The governor's plan to lower income taxes for middle-class families won't offset what they're currently losing in take-home pay because of the increase in the social security tax. That's according to a local financial counselor.

Alan Prahl of FISC says it would be really bad timing to raise the gas tax on top of that. He says losing even a small chunk of money can put a serious strain on family budgets, and lowering income taxes wouldn't help as much.

Prahl says he's pleased to hear that some top Republican lawmakers oppose the gas tax hike.

Prahl says for many people, a slight increase in taxes is a "nickel and dime" situation, but if they don't have any change to spare, it can be financially devastating.
