Washington Place demolition could start soon
The former Washington Place senior housing building in downtown Appleton is coming down soon, and city officials are going over the bids for the demolition work.
Public works director Paula Vandehey says the plan calls for the demolition to be done in July, and then the city would finishing rebuilding Washington Street.
Crews re-did much of that street last year, but Vandehey says they left the spot in front of Washington Place. She says because of the impact on the bus system, library, and a parking ramp, they want to stay on schedule, and finish as quickly as possible.
The Appleton Housing Authority converted two former hotels into Washington Place years ago. The agency moved the seniors last summer to the new River Walk Place building, in the Eagle Flats development.
