Eagle Days features history of Fox Valley eagles
A presentation on the history of bald eagles in the Fox Valley is among the highlights of an eagle watching event tomorrow.
DNR biologist Dick Nikolai is speaking at 3 p.m. at the Paper Discovery Center in Appleton, as part of Eagle Days on the Fox River.
He says 30 years ago, only a handful of eagles spent the winter fishing in the river. A couple of weeks ago, officials counted about 500. Nikolai says tighter environmental laws, and the PCB cleanup effort, are most responsible for the population boom.
Nikolai says the eagles also like that the dams and paper mills keep portions of the river from freezing.
Eagle Days on the Fox River starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, at 1,000 Islands Nature Center in Kaukauna.
