Corrections chief threatens firings over rumors
The state's corrections secretary says he'll fire employees who spread rumors about the agency.
Sec. Ed Wall sent an e-mail on Monday, to address workers who are spreading "false or malicious information" about the department. He says he's heard rumors that the agency may be opening a new prison or privatizing operations. Wall says they're baseless, and the people spreading them are violating workplace rules. He says those rules will be strictly enforced.
Marty Biel is the head of the union that represents corrections workers. He says if Wall has a problem, he should discuss it with the union, or the individuals involved, instead of sending that kind of a message.
He says the e-mail is intimidating and unprofessional.
Biel says rumors about privatizing prisons are nothing new. He says they've been making the rounds for the past 15 years.
