GOP makes changes to mining bill
The proposed mining bill is undergoing some changes.
The Republican sponsors of the proposal to streamline the permitting process say they're taking steps to better protect the environment.
Sen. Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst says they're calling for more cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and they're addressing claims that a mining company could fill in large bodies of water.
Republicans are pushing the bill, in hopes that a company will open a large iron ore mine in Ashland and Iron counties.
A leading Democrat on the mining issue says the changes are a sign that Republicans are listening to the same people he's hearing from. But Sen. Tim Cullen of Janesville says there's a long way to go.
Senate and Assembly committees are expected to vote on the Republican version of the mining bill tomorrow.
