Lawmaker backs nuclear energy bill
A lawmaker from De Pere wants to add nuclear power to
the types of energy that qualify for renewable energy credits in the state.
Republican Rep. Andre Jacque says nuclear power should be seen in the same light as wind, solar, and hydro, because it creates nearly no carbon emissions.
Power companies are required to invest in a certain amount of renewable energy sources by 2015. Jacque says if his proposal was on the books five years ago, the Kewaunee nuclear power plant probably wouldn't be closing now.
He's also supporting a proposal to lift the state's moratorium on building new nuclear reactors in Wisconsin. He says that would help in the long term.
Jacque says eliminating the ban would be a big deal for the Point Beach and Kewaunee plants, because they both have room for additional reactors.
