Ice conditions vary at start of spearing season

The DNR expects about 12,000 people will participate in this year's sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago and the upriver lakes, and they'll have to deal with varying ice conditions.

Don Herman of SUNK Towing says on the eastern side of Lake Winnebago, people can drive trucks out about four miles. But he says that's not the case on the west side, where the ice is only thick enough to support four-wheelers.

Herman says it's been an odd winter on the lake. He says there are two-to-three foot high cracks in the ice on the western side of the lake.

He says the upriver lakes -- Poygan and Butte des Morts -- have great ice. He says the water clarity on the smaller lakes is also much better than on Winnebago.
