Slow start to sturgeon spearing season

The numbers from the opening weekend of the sturgeon spearing season were down on Lake Winnebago.

DNR fisheries biologist Ryan Koenigs says they registered 60 fish over the first two days. He says while that's similar to last year's total, it's well below what they see during a typical opening weekend.

Koenigs says the water clarity is poor, and right now, spearers can't see more than six-to-10 feet deep on Winnebago.

Koenigs says on Saturday, Peter Vander Weilen speared one of the 10 biggest sturgeon, on record. He says the nearly 180-pound, 80-inch fish ranks sixth.

The opening weekend totals on the upriver lakes were much better. Koenigs says they registered 214 sturgeon, because the water clarity was good. He says they might have to shut down the upriver season as early as tomorrow, because they're closing in on the harvest cap for adult females.
