Study: Hospital readmittance rate over 10 percent

A national report shows millions of patients are finding themselves back in the hospital within weeks of going home, and the problem is showing up in Wisconsin.

Anne Weiss of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation says the elderly are especially vulnerable.  She says there are ways hospitals can reduce the return rate, including making sure patients know their medication schedule, and they return for followup appointments.

The readmission rate for Wisconsin hospitals is slightly below the national average.

In Appleton, the rate was a little over 15 percent for people with medical problems, and just under 10 percent for surgical patients. Hospitals in Neenah and Green Bay had rates of around 14.5 percent for medical and 10.5 for surgical.

The national average is nearly 16 percent for medical problems, and 12.5 percent for surgical patients.
