Ellis to fight voucher expansion
Republicans have the majority in both houses of the Legislature,
but Governor Walker might have a tough time getting his proposed voucher school expansion through the Senate.
Senate President Mike Ellis insists on holding a referendum before expanding the private-school vouchers. The governor's plan is part of his budget, and it does not include a local vote.
Ellis says he's prepared to fight the governor on the issue, and he says about a dozen other Republican lawmakers are on his side. The Neenah Republican says people should have a say in expanding vouchers, because they're paying the bill. He says he doesn't think the state has the money to pay for a dual education system.
Ellis says the voucher proposal should have to stand on its own merits, instead of being buried in the budget.
