Wis. apple crop smallest in 67 years
Unusual weather last spring led to the smallest Wisconsin apple crop in 67 years.
Very warm weather in March caused apple trees to blossom, and frosts in April killed the emerging fruit. That led to a 54 percent drop in the harvest, in 2012.
Rick Pynenberg owns Apple Creek Orchard in Freedom, and he says he's one of the lucky ones, even though he lost 60 percent of his crop. He says other growers saw losses topping 80 percent. Pynenberg says his bottom line took a hit.
Pynenberg says he's owned his orchard for years, and he'll be able to bounce back from last year's poor crop. He says many other local growers are in a similar situation. Pynenberg says growers that just got into the business in the last few years were hit the hardest.
