Walker wants to drop residency rules
Governor Walker touted his proposed budget
this morning, during a stop in Appleton.
The two-year spending plan includes a provision that would eliminate residency rules for government workers around the state. Appleton, Green Bay, and a number of local communities require department heads to live inside the municipal borders.
Walker says the rules cover more people in Milwaukee, and the school system have had a tough time finding teachers recently. He says instead of taking a patch-work approach, he decided to try to repeal the requirement across the state.
Walker says workers should be hired based on their qualifications, and not where they live.
The governor toured Miller Electric's facilities on W. Spencer Street, and talked with employees. The company has added nearly 250 workers in the last two years.
