Sturgeon season closing soon
The closing weekend of the 16-day sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago starts tomorrow, and a DNR official says a lot of people will go home disappointed.
Sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says water clarity was poor during the entire season, but some spearers are adapting to the conditions. He says they're moving toward shallow water, where they can see the bottom.
Spearers on the upriver lakes had much better luck. That season closed shortly after the opening weekend, and Koenigs says more than 50 percent of the spearers there took home a sturgeon.
He says they won't even come close to the harvest caps on Lake Winnebago. The season on the big lake ends Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
